I'm back.

Two weeks in Africa left me with overwhelmingly diverse impressions and emotions. An ideal climate, a long and gentle seacoast, Tunisia, the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive s or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics, on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara.

Experiencing the Arabic culture has been a disruptive and very valuable experience for me. With a Human Development Index of 71 (my home country ranks 14) Tunisia is an extremely poor country, however, the people I've met were unbelievably friendly and all passionate to service. In fact I've rarely experienced such a consistent, honest and unpretentious hospitality at all and I've been to many places considered "leading hotels of the world".

During our stay in Tunisia my wife and I successfully earned our Golf License (in Germany so called "Platzreifeprüfung"). We went through an intensive course with PGA Tour Member and Golf Pro Fethi Mhadhbi with whom we had the pleasure to spend lots of time in one-on-ones and finally played the great Hammamet Golf course.

Usually Fethi trains groups of 6-8 people but we were lucky enough to be the only ones who had booked his course at that specific time so we had 100% of our Pro's attention for the entire time of the course. Fethi not only taught us the concept, theory, history, passion and practice of Golf but also provided us with a rich and very personal insight into the Arabic culture seen through the eyes of a world class player who had travelled the globe before.

Usually when my vacation nears its ending I'm looking very much forward to getting home. This time it has been different. I'd not say I could have stayed forever. But I definitely want to return to Africa and getting to know so much more about the Arabic culture and a country which has suffered so much during our decade. Tunisia and specifically the people of Tunisia made a huge difference to my wife and me.

We'll definitely return to Africa early next year.
